EARL HINES' ORCHESTRA COMES TO THE HOWARD Beginning Saturday, the Howard will open their prize package of attractions and the first one to come out will no doubt be one of your favorites. From the Grand Terrace Cafe in Chicago comes Earl Hines, the king of jazz pianists and his Grand Terrace Orchestra. A company of sixty entertainers from a de luxe revue. It is known that the radio has brought to you this sterling musician as he can be heard over the N.B.C. hook-up from Chicago. Jenny Dancer, heralded far and wide as one of the foremost songsters of the day, will be among the featured stars in this fast-moving revue from the West. Earl Hines promises one of the most sensational of all musical programs. The screen features Wynne Gibson and Preston Foster in "Sleepers East." A drama that tears the lid off a city's shame. On the word of one woman hangs a man's life, a lovers' hope, a lawyers success and a statesman' career. Could they make her keep her lips shut? All explained in this great drama "Sleepers East." Special mid-nite performances Saturday with reserved seats. ------------------------------------------------ FIRED HOUSE WAITER CASE UP FRIDAY The case of Harold Covington, Howard University student, who is alleged to have struck Harry Parker, 70-year-old messenger of the House Ways and Means Committee, continued on Friday, March 30, in the Police Court. Young Covington, who was fired from his job as waiter in the House restaurant for serving a colored newspaperman, is free on a $400 bond after taking part in a demonstration with twenty-nine other students from Howard University on Saurday, March 16. ------------------------------------------------ "KEEP UP FIGHT," SAYS ALLIANCE FRIEND (Continued from page 2) Anyway, there are a whole lot of people who sit around doing nothing until somebody else starts something. Then they are the first ones to tell them what they should do, instead of what they are doing. If there are people who think that the first thing we should do is to build our own businesses, then why don't they start an organization for this purpose. As for the New Negro Alliance, I think that it should go right ahead and fight for jobs for our people in those stores where they spend their money Respectfully yours, Sidney W. Ransome, Jr. ------------------------------------------------ HOUSE VOTE ON CAFE JIM CROW SET FOR APRIL 9 (Continued from page 1) 41. William E. Hess, O. 42. W. I. Traeger, Cal. 43. S. L. I conclude by writing verbatim the section which I look for in all organizations I have reference to the one setting forth the duties and restrictions of the Treasurer. It follows: "The Treasurer shall have custody of all funds of the Alliance, and shall deposit them in a banking institution approved by the Executive Council to the credit and in the name of the New Negro Alliance, Inc. He shall keep a true and correct record of all his receipts and disbursements, and submit them to examination whenever requested to do so by the Executive Council. He shall make reports of the financial standing of the Alliance upon request of the Administrator and the Executive Council." Last but not least: "Whenever the Executive Council deems it necessary the Treasurer shall be required to post bond, in an amount fixed by the Council for the faithful performance of his duties." Drop in the N.N.A office at 2001 Eleventh Street, Northwest, in the Lewis Building, Room 101, and see or receive a copy of the Constitution. See THE NEW NEGRO OPINION office and meet the office force.
