WAR DEPARTMENT,
Bureau Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands,
OFFICE GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT SCHOOLS.
Washington, D.C., October 31st, 1868.

Brig. Gen. H.M. Whittlesey,
Chief Quartermaster,

General,
I have the honor to state that on the 3d of Dec. of last year I made application for one zinc fire screen, for my room. Not receiving it, I renewed the application after about two months, when you caused an order to be issued to have it made. I have not yet been furnished with a screen, and now the season for fires has come about; we are greatly in need of it.

I respectfully request that you will furnish me with one as soon as convenient.

Very respectfully,
Your obt. servant,
J.W. Alvord
Gen. Supt. Schools.
