Conception during the year 1812 there were 7,917 mixed blood and Negroes. Abolition of slavery took place in July 1823 according to Barros Arana, the credit must go to the Republic of Chile for having first emancipated its slaves outright and forgetting questions of race and color. In the words of Sala they closed the doors of an institution that was a dishonor to humanity. Half a century later it was seen in spots and today almost unknown, the frozen air of the lofty mountains and the spirit of the war of independence had been fatal to the unspeakable institution.

What we have said of Chile applies with equal force to the Republic of Mexico in documents from the Archives of the Indies during the period of 1560, we find sufficient evidence to show the large population of Negroes as reported by the various Archbishop parishes amounting to more than 25,000. Alfonso Toro in his ethnological investigations firmly believes the influence of the Negro had much to do in the formation of the Mexican race.

IN the capital of the Argentine Republic there is a statue to the memory of "Falucho" nicknamed after his soldier's cap by his comrades, a free colored man of this city who took the name of his former master, Antonio Ruiz, joined the battalion Sons of Liberty in 1813, fought in the Peruvian campaign and the Andean wars, was taken a prisoner at the battle of Callao, refused to salute the Spanish flag and was taken from the ranks and shot to death. This Negro soldier gave the highest expression of valor in the war of Independence. The Argentine nation shows appreciation of heroism when it lets the world know that in all its wars for independence and against usurpation of its territory, the Negro has represented the first line of defense and has never been found wanting in those attributes of courage which the world admires.

What is true of the Argentine Republic can also be said of Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil and other South and Central American Republics. It was in the now chained Haiti that evidence of the Negro as a courageous foe took wings to France and elsewhere, they demonstrated their capacity in creating a new language known as Creole. Whatever philological idea any may have, the Spanish word "criollo," Mr. Rossi tells us, the root is African pure and simple. The Haitians not only acquired the knowledge of the French language but learned the intricate stratagem of war, when necessity demanded its execution they turned on their cruel masters and drove them out of their island. When South America, under Bolivar and San Martin, drove out the Spaniards it was heralded as revolution, but when the Haitians preceded them in this same undertaking the full measure of "high crimes and misdemeanors" was voiced and they were put down as barbarians. From this successful event the Europeans have taken a good lesson and their endeavors to maintain their supremacy is registered in the chancelleries of all nations to deny the weaker people the right to register their will against oppression by the use of arms under the pretext of paternal solicitude for their welfare.

NO more respectable authority than the contemporaneous Spanish chroniclers when writing of the color of the Moors can be cited. "The Spaniards and Lusitanians had more than eight hundred years of 'dark' procreation without intervention from any other race, and it is locigal with eight hundred years of living mutually together were absorbed, the same as the Negro among us. It has been observed in European regions where the Moors did conquer, their physical characteristics are retained, for not being countries to receive immigration, they lacked biological renovation to conserve their inheritance with gentle modifications determined by cultural adaptation. They are of a color showing all gradations from the most perfect white to the darkest hue of black."

"Negro Doings" to the South of us contains the Negro in the conquest and colonization of the Americas, Negro government, the first patriotic-religious feast with their "Candombe" reflecting their African orientation in organization, usages and customs. It contains besides these the origin of the Milonga, the Tango, the folklore of the Argentine, a plethora of revelations that are suggestive in itself, historical rectifications that must include the Negro in the present history of the Americas. The book of 450 pages can be read in the great libraries or obtained directly from the author for two dollars a copy. Persons interested in the early Negroes in the Americas will enjoy the perusal of this book as seen by a white man of a perfectly serene temperament.

The Surprise - (Continued from page 44)

of previous drinks surged upon him, as he contemplated the curved flask of whiskey, with his finger-tips on the large container of Tom Collins. The tall glass - White Rock - a Tom Collins. Repetition. And then - who would care?

THE gentleman was about to leave - "high" as usual, when sweet strains of a hot jazz ascended from the library. He began making motions with his hands. His feet were tapping time, as he came to the stairs. Then, suddenly - something was wrong. The radio - it was on; that's what it was. But he seldom played it. Baxter, - no, Baxter never - Daphne! - no. Someone was in, - .

A woman faced him on the stairs. Dark - middle-aged - magnificently groomed. He started towards her, with an inquiring gesture. Silently, she waved him back, and ascended the stairs. Her coquettish smile mingled artfully with languishing eyes.

This woman was an intruder - but how? He should eject her at once - but how? For a brief moment, as he watched the regal form strut in dignified fashion across his bedroom, that certain devilish feeling that generally takes possession of one after numerous Tom Collins', was telling him he didn't care. And he didn't.

She seemed to be inspecting his service cabinet. He seemed unable to resist a studious inspection of her curves. Neither spoke.

The woman was unusual. He drew closer, as she helped herself to a Haig & Haig.

"JUST who are you, may I ask? It is rather unconventional, don'tcha know, for a lady to break in upon the calm routine of a bachelor's sanctuary in this manner." A motion of her hand gave nonchalant reply, as the other poured liquor into her mouth.

Carl watched the expansive breast - the smooth contour of her bare throat.

"If I may be so bold," he ventured, "how did you manage to gain such an effectual entrance?" She held a pencil in her hand, and was feverishly searching for something in her bag. The man watched, intently. She produced a card, and wrote -

I am intruding to see if you will flirt. I am -

That grand and glorious feeling surged through Carl, suddenly. He was swinging.

His hand came down upon the smooth, powdered arm - stopped the last curve of the pencil.

"So you're the bold adventurer, eh? Well, cutie, I am game. You sure ain't fell on no wet blanket here. Hic - 'er, have another - hic - one, baby."

SHE reached for a cigarette. He restrained her, and volunteered service. As he held the lighter to her cigarette, she studied him, furtively. The radio was bringing in another hot number. The strange woman arose, declining a proffered highball. Carl made an attempt to caress her. Silence gave consent. The languorous eyes gazed soulfully into his - her body swayed in his embrace. He kissed her, passionately.

He knew nothing - realized nothing - unmindful of consequences. This was his wild, Arabian Night. Daphne was gone. She'd never know.

The telephone rang. He shuffled lazily to his bedside. As he raised the receiver to his ear, the strange woman began to descend the stairs.

"Hello, Carl, dear! This is Daphne speaking. The surprise I had for you was mother. She insisted on coming up ahead of me - wouldn't say why. Anyway, I loaned her my key. And Carl, dear, you'll be surprised - she's the original 'different' girl. Been speechless for twelve years."
