Dear folks,

The first rainy day in five weeks! Forest fires, Conneticutt [[sic]] valley water shortage, away. The "Crimson" went so far as to print an article yesterday in which was explained the movement on foot to "share your shower with a Holyoke girl"--even baths and hair washing had been curtailed there.

In hopes that it will be dry and fine again for the sailing of the weekend. Perhaps I could invite them to Sunday dinner, or Sat supper, or something like that; if possible I should like to see the racing too; but all in due time. Sat night is the Idler Formal, and I invited Dick last night--Dick Seed, that is. He will finish his exams Sat. My first is Friday--English 1.

I wonder if Dolores is reading the Old Testament as we are now? Richards stresses the entanglement of those stories, points out their significance to the writers--as tribe movements--, and explains as best he can the meaning back of them; but he continually insists the meagerness of his knowledge and impossibility of even getting to be able to read them, much less interpret them. 17th century lit is being presented to me as an interesting parallel to 20th century--containing much of the same type of obscure poetry that the people of the day couldn't understand but which appears fairly obvious to us today. Nora Millard, whom I talked to one evening has chosen it as her field for that reason--an approach to the present. It might be worth looking into. History of Art is a snap course in most places. I shall be very glad to hear from her. Glancing to your second letter, it would nice to see Pat too; but difficult to get so many people to supper--cost me a fortune. Maybe we could all get together down at Harvard square. Besides the expense, which might not be an obstacle, there is much difficulty in getting guests--you have to be sure that someone else is going to be absent, for they only make so much food.

I won't be out to see Grandma until after hour exams and my Humanities paper is due--after Nov 12, in other words. I did write both [[strikethrough]] she [[/strikethough]] her and Norma recently, perhaps she got the wrong impression from my letter.

Love,
Doris
