Arlington 17 Oct. 1947

Dear Doris:

According to the old-style 3-dimensional economists (before the Roosevelt II-era added the 4th dimensional ones), the nation that didn't live within its budget was heading for financial ruin. The same applies more or less, probably more, to individuals. Passing from the general to the particular, I can't see how you have contrived to spend $55 in 3 weeks. You said that you didn't have to buy many books, and you have all your meals provided except your lunches, which can't be expensive, and the occasional ice-cream. We really can't keep on shoveling out money at this rate. I am sending check for $10 which you will have to get along on until the end of the month, and please don't go borrowing on the side to eke out.

We think you & Jean were rather high-handed in using your own judgment in picking out the things to send to Louise [[strikethrough]] wh [[/strikethrough]] after she had asked to have everything. I should think [[strikethrough]] you [[/strikethrough]] she would need her typewriter as much as anything. At least you had better write her & explain things, if you haven't already done so.

Set down in your note book:
Cheeses, not cheezes.
Rotten, not rotton.
Pyjamas, not pijamas.
Tiptoening? - or tiptoing? - Better see "on tiptoe" and dodge the question

Hic finis paginae, gratias Deo.
Opinor, sat dixisse. Ecce perscriptio plecuniae tuae; dissipe eam tarde, et non mutuare.
