Dear Doris:

This is the first time I have sat down today. You can just see the house after 4 weeks of Daddy's occupancy! The dust and dirt were deep, nearly as many spiders as Mrs Barry left behind her, and the untidiness of tables and desks and mantels past belief. Not a bed in the house made and the kitchen table thick with dishes that while he declared he had washed them, didn't have at all a shiny clean look. Newspapers covered the dining room table and on them stood an array of his favorite condiment bottles intermixed with crumbs, glasses, etc. But a forenoon's work has tidied up the place.

We sailed along at 50-60 miles p. hour all day and reached home about 8 (13 hours), rather tired and decidedly chilly. So we went to bed and this morning made up a fire in the furnace. We bought 5 yellow Hubbard squashes coming thru N.J., one we gave to Mrs Arm for looking after the fish, another to Mrs Allard for looking after the silver. Mrs Allard said her husband sailed from IVV to S. Domingo this time and had a stateroom with 4 P. Ricans and 1 nigger and couldn't sleep because of the smells and such. He took down 20 pairs of pants so he could have dry ones enough, and as soon as he arrived planted a garden and the hurricane next week washed his seeds all out. She gave us a bag of pawpaws. We bought a little basket of McIntosh apples and a bag of tomatoes and Concord grapes and Dad found a little round watermelon too. New Jersey wayside stands were full of harvestings and we loved the great heaps of golden squashes everywhere.

IVV - NV - ? It definitely looks like IVV, so I removed the brackets. Maybe it's roman numerals? - megshu
