Arlington, Va. 7 May 1947. Dear Doris: Dolores has just called up about that list that you sent her. It makes me sick to think of you wasting your precious time, health and eyesight, as well as jeopardizing your marks, over that foolishness. No wonder you can't write any letters and are staying up till midnight every night. Do you ever expect to get anywhere by this immoderation? That sense of good balance and mean has entirely deserted you, and I can only understand it by your association with one who has none herself. We have sufficient money to put you thru your college without outside exertions of this sort. If you were an invalid who needed amusement or one who had not a chore in the world it would be all right to go in for such stump, but you are not. In order to get ahead in this world, you have to keep your eyes fixed on your goal. So let up, and concentrate on your studies. I am sorry to be always scolding you. I'd like to take a whack at that Dutch girl for getting you into it. It is chilly and windy and rainy by spells down here. Your fern garden is springing up, the maiden hair unrolling and the bigger ferns sending up fiddle heads. Western High seems to be right in the news & radio too. I enclose clippings. I hope poor Mr. Danowsky doesn't get bounced. We are going on daylight saving time the coming week, it was announced tonight, doggone it. Love Mother.
