April 19

Dear folks,

Patriots' Day. Good for it: have just finished Isaiah: 70 long pages. Did I tell you of the Bible orals. Hist-lit. Sophomores go through tomorrow? Have spent the last three days on the 8 Bible books & commentaries, have yet to read the O.T. aids.

I envy your trip to the Mellon, Mother. Have you them all down pat at last? Must be people from all over the country for they could not all seen as many times as you...

Beautiful weather. Damp buildings this morning, with yellow & green [[?]] in hedges. They washed clean. Girls sitting out on Bertram fire escapes, knitting or reading, knees propped up.

Gave $1.50 towards a gift for Mary's shower (attended Sat): Joan, Jean, Sally & I gave most original gift: a table egg cooker. Someone took addition (not included) to be part of directions: "this will warm 4 baby bottles", it said; ah, the unhappy catch, was shown it in this name, had aprons tied about him for size, etc: he arrived conventionally late, poor boy, about 20 girls, of whom knew only about 4. Lots to eat (at her Brighton home). We only got him over by saying the girls had left.

Jean has the most remarkable grandmother. Age 74, she decided after war to go visit some old women she knew in Italy. We got a letter from her today vigorously describing conditions & the changed (or same) natures of her friends. Of one, "She's still stubborn, too late to change."

Bought a dozen cookies from Marcia (who'll send $ abroad). We all did. I try not to eat them. Sold one dozen to go for Marcia witnessed her give them to Margaret (she on diet, and immediately Margaret gave them covertly to me. No escape.

It must be annoying that the species of the word do not order themselves into publication-size on time!

Love,
Doris
