Dear Doris:

It was a sunny but cool day. We have had the furnace fire going again for some time now, and had 2 more tons of coal put in Friday, just about filling the bin. In the afternoon we drove up nearly to Great Falls (VA), getting 3 buckets of dirt for the garden and a little bunch of violets &c. Dogwood was in full bloom, altho' some of it had been touched by frost, and there was an exceptional display of (planted) pink dogwood along the route we took. This morning we drove around Haines Pt. to see the double cherries, which were all that were in flower when the festival was held last Sunday. If there were any Japanese present they must have laughed to themselves. The trees have been pruned so severely that they are little more than thick sticks with bunches of pink flowers along the stems.

I sent the "Three men in a boat" to Dr. Rickett and had a letter back from him this week. He was very much pleased with it. He said it took him back in 3 minutes to his Victorian childhood, when his father used to take him boating on the Thames. He is making a trip to England in May.

Today I have been working between times getting my Belgian flora cards in shape for copying for the final manuscript. We actually began copying this week, doing San Marino (a little republic hidden in Italy, which has only 1 flora) and beginning Luxembourg, which has only about 8 titles.

Mother & I cleaned up upstairs today to have it in shape when Beguaert comes down two weeks hence. He is not going to stop here but we shall have him out to supper. I enclose check for $7.

We read about the ≠ riot in connection with pro-Communist meetings in Cambridge and wondered if you were in the vicinity.

Love,
SFB
