Earl S. Daugherty was born at Des Moines, Iowa April 4, 1887. In 1902 his parents moved to Long Beach, California where he attended local grade and High Schools, then the Long Beach Business College. He was first employed in a bank from 1905 through 1907, then turned to photography from 1908 through 1910. In 1910 and 1911 he was engaged in the automobile business. 

During this time there was a lot of amateur aeroplane building being done in the Los Angles area and two major air meets held in 1910 greatly spurred local interest in flying. Several of these local experimenters established their own small flying fields to carry on their work and occasionally the various builders would hold an amateur flying meet to further the sport. As a result of all this aviation activity Daugherty became very interested and frequented these private flying fields where he could become better acquainted with men and keep in touch with what was going on. One of the groups was Jay Gage, who had built a plane somewhat along Curtiss and Farman lines, using 4 cyl. 40 H.P. Hall-Scott engine, and had established a small field for himself in the Hyde Park area. There Gage was experimenting with his plane and teaching himself
