CONSIDERATION OF THE PROPOSED CONSENT AND INFORMATION AGENDA

Mr. Woolsey directed the Regents' attention to the Proposed Consent and Information Agenda. He invited comments on the materials which had been circulated in advance of this meeting under this heading (given below, to page 84). In addition he called for the designation of former Regent Jamie L. Whitten as a Regent Emeritus, as noted in the first item below.

In discussion, a Regent prospectively welcomed new members of boards and commissions to the vast ranks of nearly 5,000 Smithsonian volunteers. Other Regents thanked the Secretary for preparing a useful history of the Smithsonian's role in the creation of the National Museum of the American Indian (as presented below). It was suggested that such retrospective studies would be helpful to future Regents' discussions on items of longstanding complexity.

DESIGNATION OF MR. WHITTEN AS A REGENT EMERITUS

It was noted that the Honorable Jamie L. Whitten, who has served as a Congressional Regent of the Smithsonian since January 27, 1989, has been replaced as a member of the Board by action of the Speaker of the House. In recognition of the distinction which his participation brought to the Board of Regents and in eager anticipation of his continuing relationship with the Regents and the Smithsonian Institution, the following motion was suggested and approved:

VOTED that, in accordance with Section 2:08 of the Bylaws, the Board of Regents confers on Jamie L. Whitten the title of Regent Emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution, with all the rights and responsibilities thereof.

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 21, 1992

VOTED that the Board of Regents approves the Minutes of the meeting of September 21, 1992, as previously circulated on October 27, 1992.
