SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 1284

Museum, pending certain reorganizations that have now been accomplished, as reported last year. Accordingly, on May 26, 1948, Dr. Remington Kellogg, a member of our scientific staff since 1928, and one especially skilled in Museum procedures, was appointed Director. Dr. Kellogg assumed his new duties immediately, and is proceeding with them actively and efficiently.

For many years the important historical collections of the National Museum have been administered as a Division of History, which has reported to the Director of the Museum. Effective August 17, 1948, this was set up as a Department of History on a basis equal to that of the other departments of the Museum, thus bringing to completion another step long contemplated in the National Museum organization.

Following the retirement of Ruel P. Tolman, Director of the National Collection of Fine Arts, Mr. Thomas M. Beggs was appointed to this position on April 1, 1948. After search for one who would be competent, Mr. Beggs, for the past 20 years head of the Art Department at Pomona College, in Claremont, California was brought to the Institution in September, 1947, as Assistant Director under Mr. Tolman. Mr. Beggs has measured up fully to the duties of the position and is handling the activities of the National Collection of Fine Arts in competent and capable manner.
