SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION   1334

WHEREAS; The Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution under date of January 12, 1945, resolved that whenever the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution shall reach the age of sixty-five years, either the Secretary or the Board of Regents may appropriately raise the question of his retirement from active service, and at that time his retirement shall be considered by the Board of Regents on the ground of age and such action shall be taken with respect to his retirement as to the Board may seem appropriate;

AND WHEREAS, at the meeting of January 12, 1945 the Regents duly elected Dr. Alexander Wetmore Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution;

AND WHEREAS the Secretary, Dr. Wetmore, at the meeting of the Board of Regents of January 12, 1951 duly informed the Board that on June 18, 1951 he would reach the age of 65, and that it was his desire to be relieved of his administrative duties whenever a successor might be elected;

THEREFORE be it resolved, that the term of Dr. Wetmore as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution be hereby extended, following his attainment of the age of 65 years, until such time as his successor has been duly elected.

It was instructed that announcement of the above resolution should be made on behalf of the Board through a press release immediately following the meeting.

REPORT OF SPECIAL COMMITTEE APPOINTED TO SELECT A NEW SECRETARY

Robert V. Fleming, Chairman of the Special Committee to select a successor to Dr. Wetmore as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, stated that the Committee had held a preliminary meeting on April 25, 1951.
