considered had been received from Dr. Hunsaker and Dr. Compton, and that Dr. Bush and the Chairman had provided names of others. The Committee had decided to hold in abeyance the matter of retirement compensation for the present Secretary pending selection of his successor, in consideration of certain legal problems which have to be worked out in this regard. Another meeting will be scheduled at the end of the present school term, at which time the full Committee may be present.

REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

The Chairman of the Executive Committee, Mr. Fleming, informed the Board that the Institution's portfolio continues in good condition, adding informally pertinent details for the information of those present.

ESTIMATE FOR FEDERAL APPROPRIATIONS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1952

The Secretary gave the following outline comparing the appropriation for the present fiscal year with the estimates for the Fiscal Year 1952:

Appropriated fiscal year 1951    $2,700,000
Estimate for 1952 submitted by Bureau of the Budget    2,557,000
Reduction from 1951   $  143,000
Estimate allowed by Subcommittee in House             $2,391,000
Reduction from original Budget estimate  165,100                

The reductions made by the House Subcommittee are as follows:

Establishment of a third field station for the Astrophysical Observatory   75,000
Supplies & equipment for the Division Radiation & Organisms   40,000
Other obligations  50,800
$ 165,800

Application is being made to the Senate Subcommittee on Independent Offices requesting restoration of these three items.
