SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 1348

Smithsonian Institution and its branches now operate. It is our understanding that the House Committee has employed special technical assistance in preparing this revision. The draft as originally prepared contained serious omissions that would affect the existing authorities of the Institution adversely. We have had close and friendly contact with the Committee, and have submitted a revision, that appears to be agreeable to the drafting group, adequate to protect our interests and to safeguard our continued operations. This has been gone over very carefully and minutely. It is assumed this matter will be under discussion at this coming session of Congress.

GIFTS AND BEQUESTS

The act establishing the National Air Museum included provision for the acceptance of a suitable representation of General William Mitchell, under funds to be provided by George H. Stephenson of Philadelphia. The death of Mr. Stephenson came a little over a year ago with the provision in his estate for $15,000 for the purpose indicated. The intention is to secure a suitable bust to be prepared by a sculptor who will be acceptable to the Fine Arts Commission.

The National Geographic Society provided $8,000 toward the expenses of a cooperative archaeological expedition into western Panamá under the direction of Dr. W. M. Stirling, Director of the Bureau of American Ethnology.

The Rockefeller Foundation made a grant of $6,000 toward support of the Institution's program with the Escola Livre de Sociologia e Politica de São Paulo, in research, training, publications, and translations in the social sciences.

Research Corporation has made a grant of $7,200 to cover costs of a publication of a series of 23-place logarithm tables prepared by Dr. George W. Spenceley of Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.
