SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 1352

Mr. Fleming then stated that while the subject he was about to bring up had not been discussed by the Special Committee, he felt it was only appropriate that Dr. Wetmore be accorded the same recognition, by being given the title of Research Associate, as was granted to his predecessor, and he stated he desired to offer the following resolution:

RESOLVED: That in order to continue Dr. Wetmore's connection with the research of the Smithsonian Institution on retirement from the position of Secretary of the Institution he will be given the title of Research Associate.

On motion this resolution was adopted.

REPORT OF THE SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A SUCCESSOR TO THE SECRETARY

At the January 1951 meeting of the Board of Regents, the Chancellor appointed a special Committee to recommend (a) a successor to Dr. Wetmore as Secretary, and (b) appropriate conditions of retirement that would enable Dr. Wetmore to return to his scientific work. The Committee was composed of Messrs. Fleming, Chairman; Bush; Cannon; Compton; and Hunsaker.

Three meetings were held in 1951.

The first meeting on April 25 was concerned with:

(a) Preliminary consideration of nominees whose names were before the Committee.

(b) Plans to increase the list.

(c) Direction for the preparation of biographies of all nominees for distribution to Committee members.

It was further decided that the nominees to be recommended for election should come preferably from outside the Institution.

At the second meeting, October 15, an additional name was added and the list of nominees was reduced from twenty-seven to eleven.
