REPORT OF THE SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON NOMINATION FOR SECRETARY

Robert V. Fleming, Chairman of a Special Committee of the Board of Regents, designated for the purpose of screening and considering applications for the secretaryship, and to submit recommendations to the Board concerning eligible individuals available, expressed appreciation to the Chief Justice and to the members of the Committee, Dr. Bush, Mr. Cannon, Dr. Hunsaker and Dr. Compton for their assistance, and to Mr. Graf, secretary to the Committee for handling the detail of the various meetings. 

Mr. Fleming then presented the following: 

RESOLVED: That Dr. Leonard Carmichael be, and he is hereby, elected Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, to succeed Dr. Alexander Wetmore, retiring; that the employment of Dr. Carmichael as Secretary shall be subject to the terms and conditions of an agreement to be entered into as of this day by and between the Regents of the Smithsonian Institution and Dr. Carmichael, such agreement to be approved by the Board of Regents prior to its execution. 

Upon motion duly made and seconded, the resolution was adopted. 

The Chancellor submitted a form of agreement proposed to be entered into between the Regents of the Smithsonian Institution and Dr. Leonard Carmichael covering the terms and conditions of Dr. Carmichael's employment as Secretary of the Institution. The proposed agreement is as follows: 

"THIS AGREEMENT IS MADE IN the City of Washington, District of Columbia, on April 9, 1952, by the Regents of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment duly created, organized and existing under the laws of the United States, and having its principal headquarters in Washington, D. C., hereinafter referred to as Regents, and Dr. Leonard Carmichael, residing in Medford, Massachusetts, hereinafter referred to as Dr. Carmichael.
