SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 1356

WHEREIN IT IS MUTUALLY AGREED THAT: 

Dr. Carmichael having heretofore been elected Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution by the Regents, he is hereby employed as Secretary of said Institution, subject to the following terms and conditions: 

(1) Dr. Carmichael shall also serve as Secretary of the Board of Regents and shall hold his office at the pleasure of the Board of Regents, pursuant to the provisions of Revised Statutes, 5582, 5583, and 5584. 

(2) Dr. Carmichael shall receive a salary of Twenty Thousand ($20,000) Dollars per annum, to be paid out of the income of the Trust Funds of the Institution. 

(3) Dr. Carmichael shall take office as Secretary of the Institution and Secretary of the Board of Regents on January 1, 1953. 

(4) Dr. Carmichael shall make appropriate contributions required for participation in the United States Civil Service System which will establish a life annuity under such system upon his retirement. 

(5) Dr. Carmichael on attaining the age of sixty-five years will on retirement be granted a pension by the Regents, to be paid out of the income of the Trust Funds of the Institution, which pension together with the annuity referred to in paragraph (4) will constitute a sum of not less than Twelve Thousand ($12,000) per annum. Solely for the purpose of determining the amount of the pension to be granted by the Regents, the annuity referred to herein shall be considered and computed upon a single life annuity basis as provided for under the United States Civil Service Retirement System. 

(6) Dr. Carmichael may continue to serve as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and Secretary of the Board of Regents beyond retirement age, if, at such time, the Regents and Dr. Carmichael shall so mutually agree.
