SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 1360

Other expenses (reduction) $117,200

This would require a one-third reduction in publication, telephone service, building maintenance, supplies, equipment and travel. In all of these we operate now with careful economy, the present funds being insufficient for our needs. Curtailment would operate in damage to our buildings, and inefficiency in operation through inability to replace deteriorating equipment.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART

Appropriated for 1952 $1,154,000
Approved by House for increased pay act 91,000

1,245,000
Budget estimate for 1953 1,300,000
Amount passed by House 1,181,000

Reduction 118,900

The House reduction is distributed as follows:

Personnel 91,000

This is the amount required for the increased pay act. Present House action would reduce the Gallery from 322 positions to 252. This would lower standards of protection for the highly valuable collection below the limit of safety.

Other obligations (reduction) 27,900

The full amount estimated is completely necessary for routine required operation.
