SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 1376

Because of pressing Supreme Court business, the Chancellor was obliged to leave at 11:35 a.m. Before leaving, the Chancellor designated Mr. Robert V. Fleming, Chairman of the Executive Committee, to act as Chairman.

APPOINTMENTS OF REGENTS TO FILL EXISTING VACANCIES

Following full discussion, a motion was made and approved that the Secretary be requested to circularize the Board of Regents for suggestions to fill the two vacancies which exist in the class of Citizen Regents. The Chancellor and the Executive Committee will then decide on recommendations for the filling of these vacancies to be transmitted to Congress by the Secretary for appointment by Joint Resolution.

In discussing the existing vacancy created by the death of Mr. Cox in the class of House Regents, it was the opinion of the Board that this matter should be discussed by Mr. Cannon, Mr. Vorys and Dr. Carmichael, and that an informal approach should be made to the Speaker of the House regarding the filling of this vacancy.
