On motion by Senator Smith, seconded by Mr. Vorys, and duly carried the Report of the Executive Committee as presented was

VOTED approved for inclusion in the minutes, and the Regents expressed deep gratitude to the Chairman of the Executive Committee for his effective management of the funds and other business of the Smithsonian Institution and their wish that the present Chairman be continued in his office.

EXECUTIVE SESSION

The Acting Chairman then asked that the Board of Regents go into Executive Session, and that Secretary Carmichael and others not members of the Board retire from the room.

Following the Executive Session the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary were recalled to the meeting. The Acting Chairman and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of Regents reported that at an executive session of the Executive Committee, held December 12, 1955, it had been unanimously voted to recommend an increase in the salary of the Secretary of the  Smithsonian Institution to $24,000. It was further reported that this recommendation had been carefully considered by the Regents, in Executive Session at this Annual Meeting, and on motion by Dr. Hunsaker, seconded by Senator Saltonstall, it was unanimously

VOTED that the salary of the Secretary, from January 1, 1956 be increased not to $24,000 but to $25,000.

It was noted that a quorum was present at the time that this vote was unanimously taken.
