SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION   1425

VOTED that the income of the Institution for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1957, together with such allotments from the unobligated funds as are needed to meet necessary expenses, be appropriated for the service of the Institution, to be expended by the Secretary, with the advice of the Executive Committee, with full discretion on the part of the Secretary as to items.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SECRETARY

The Secretary submitted his annual report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1955, including the Financial Report of the Executive Committee, in printed form, stating that copies were before the Regents at the meeting.

On motion, the report was accepted.

Copies of the 1955 Annual Report of The United States National Museum were also on the table.

Time did not allow the consideration of a number of additional matters that had been suggested for informal presentation in supplement to the printed report. The Acting Chairman directed the Secretary to include a discussion of such of these matters as were relevant in his next report to the Board of Regents.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SMITHSONIAN ART COMMISSION

The thirty-third annual meeting of the Smithsonian Art Commission was held on December 6, 1955. Fourteen members were present and, acting as the advisory committee on the acceptance of works of art which had been offered to the National Collection of Fine Arts since the last meeting, recommended the following works for acceptance: Oil, Brooding Silence, by John F. Carlson, N.A. (1875-1945), Henry Ward Ranger Bequest; three miniatures, A Gentlewoman, Lady with Blue Hair Ribbon, and Lady with Pearls in Hair, by Hattie E. Burdette ( -1955), offered by George F. Linkins; a German antique cabinet and a collection of 31 pieces of glass, mostly German and Bohemian from the 16th to the 19th centuries, Bequest of Henry Osthoff; one of the six award winning pieces from the Fifth International Exhibition of Ceramic Art, held by The Kiln Club of Washington at the Smithsonian Institution September 1-22, 1955, offered by The Kiln Club of Washington; and Green Bowl, by Cynthia Wilder Mott.

On motion these recommendations were voted approved.
