SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 1429

MINUTES OF PREVIOUS ANNUAL MEETING

The Secretary stated that minutes of the Annual Meeting held January 13, 1956 had been submitted to the members of the Board.

On motion the minutes were approved, as submitted.

WELCOME TO TWO NEW CITIZEN MEMBERS

By Joint Resolution of Congress on April 6, 1956 Dr. Crawford H. Greenewalt was appointed for a term of six years to succeed Dr. Vannevar Bush as a Regent, and on the same date, by Joint Resolution of Congress, Dr. Caryl P. Haskins was appointed for a term of six years to succeed Justice Owen J. Roberts as a Regent. A welcome was extended to these two new Citizen Regents, and the hope was expressed that they would serve long and happily.

REAPPOINTMENT OF MEMBERS

The Secretary reported that the terms of Representative Brooks, Representative Cannon and Representative Vorys will expire on February 3, 1957, and stated that he had transmitted through Mr. Cannon a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives requesting their reappointment.

DELAYED REAPPOINTMENT OF MEMBER

The Secretary explained the situation in regard to the reappointment of Dr. Arthur H. Compton, who next to Mr. Cannon has served as a Regent longer than any other member of the Board. The Joint Resolution introduced in the House of Representatives and in the Senate in the 84th Congress passed each house, but the legislative process was not completed before adjournment. The Joint Resolution is again being introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate. This delay was considered unfortunate, and Dr. Compton had been invited to attend the meeting, but was unable to be present owing to pressure of other commitments. Mr. Cannon stated that Dr. Compton's new book on the atomic bomb was dramatic, readable and authoritative.
