presented by the old Patent Office Building as an art gallery. Senator Saltonstall offered, and Senator Smith seconded, the following resolutions that on motion were

VOTED:

RESOLVED: That, whereas the Board of Regents has approved the transfer of the old Patent Office Building to the Smithsonian Institution, it recommends that the site, bounded by Jefferson Drive and Independence Avenue, 4th and 7th Streets, now assigned to the Smithsonian Gallery of Art, be now reassigned to the Smithsonian Institution as a site for the National Air Museum building of the Institution.

RESOLVED FURTHER: That the Secretary be directed to commence planning for the construction of said museum and be prepared to submit his views to the Board of Regents at its next meeting or at a special meeting, and that the National Capital Planning Commission be asked to approve said reassignment.

PROBLEM OF SALARY OF THE TWO ASSISTANT SECRETARIES OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION

At the request of the Acting Chairman Mr. Graf and Dr. Keddy withdrew from the meeting. 

The Secretary made a statement regarding a proposal to increase the salaries of the two Assistant Secretaries.  After careful consideration of the problem on motion by Senator Anderson, seconded by Mr. Brooks, and carried it was

VOTED that the Secretary be authorized to take appropriate steps to raise the salaries of the two Assistant Secretaries to $18,000 per annum.

Following the vote Mr. Graf and Dr. Keddy were recalled to the meeting.

STATEMENT OF GIFTS AND BEQUESTS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1956 and FROM JULY 1, 1956 to DECEMBER 31, 1956

The Secretary read the summary of this report stating that from January 1 to June 30, 1956 twenty-seven items totaling $202,495 had been received, and from July 1 to December 31, 1956 twenty-seven items totaling $1,814,010.18 had been received. 

Mr. Vorys raised the question as to the advisability of having this report
