As Dr. Fleming was called to the telephone he relinquished the chair to Mr. Clarence Cannon at 11:35 a.m.

REPORT ON PRIVATE FUNDS AND FEDERAL APPROPRIATIONS

Copies of this report were distributed to all members.  This report was presented as a matter of information.

REPORT ON FEDERAL BUDGET AS APPROVED AND SUBMITTED TO THE CONGRESS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1958

A summary indicating the 1958 budget estimates as compared with the 1957 appropriations was distributed to all members for their information.

RETURN OF ACTING CHAIRMAN

Dr. Fleming returned to the meeting at 11:42 a.m., and again took the chair.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SMITHSONIAN ART COMMISSION

The Secretary stated that he had before him the Minutes of the Thirty-fourth Annual Meeting of the Smithsonian Art Commission dated December 4, 1956.  Copies of two suggested resolutions, given below, were distributed to the members of the Board of Regents.

RESOLVED: That the report of the Smithsonian Art Commission be accepted with the exception that the recommendation concerning the retention of the land on Jefferson Drive opposite the National Gallery of Art be reserved for Smithsonian use without specific restrictions.

RESOLVED FURTHER: That the recommendations concerning the election of members of the Commission and the acceptance of objects of art be approved, as presented in the attached report of the Commission.
