SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 1443

The Honorable Overton Brooks was unavoidably detained by a most urgent engagement.

MINUTES OF PREVIOUS ANNUAL MEETING

The Secretary stated that minutes of the Annual Meeting held January 18, 1957 had been submitted to the members of the Board.

On motion the minutes were approved, as submitted.

WELCOME TO NEW CITIZEN MEMBER

By Joint Resolution of Congress on March 14, 1957 Dr. John Nicholas Brown was appointed for a term of six years to succeed Dr. Everette Lee DeGolyer, deceased, as a Regent. Dr. Brown was welcomed to the Board, and the hope was expressed that he would serve long and happily.

REAPPOINTMENT OF MEMBERS

On January 28, 1957 the Speaker of the House of Representatives reappointed Representatives Overton Brooks, Clarence Cannon and John M. Vorys to serve for another two-year term as Regents from the House of Representatives. Senator Anderson wished to record a firm protest in regard to Mr. Vorys's announcement that he was not going to be a member of Congress after this session. The Chancellor stated that the Regents were sorry to hear about it, and this might mean it was Mr. Vorys's last annual meeting with the Board.

REAPPOINTMENT OF CITIZEN MEMBER

The term of Dr. Arthur H. Compton, Citizen Regent from St. Louis, Missouri, was renewed by Joint Resolution of Congress on March 14, 1957, for another six-year term. Dr. Compton was first appointed on June 20, 1938.
