floor. He noted that only thirty-six employees were involved. The possibility of some sort of special waiver was discussed. The outcome of the discussion resulted in the conclusion that the "Preamble" should be retained, and that if the other point seems to involve a change in the law it would be better to handle it in some other manner.

REPORT ON PROPOSED ROADWAY THROUGH THE NATIONAL ZOOLOGICAL PARK

The Secretary reported that the Director of the National Park Service was desirous of permission to construct a roadway through the National Zoological Park that would eliminate the fords, possibly absorbing some of the parking areas. After discussion Senator Anderson moved, and Dr. Haskins seconded, the following resolution that on motion was 

VOTED

RESOLVED: That the Secretary be instructed to watch carefully any plans for proposed roadways through the property of the National Zoological Park that might interfere with its present scientific and recreational purposes with especial reference to the maintenance of satisfactory parking areas, and report immediately to the Executive Committee if he believes the integrity is threatened in any way.

MATTERS OF CURRENT INTEREST

The Secretary reported on the following matters for the information of the Board and future reference. No action was taken but the Secretary was advised to continue watching these proposals:

1) Discussions concerning the part to be played by Federal appropriations and District of Columbia appropriations in financing of the National Zoological Park

2) Proposed "Department of Science and Technology" and its relation to the Smithsonian Institution

3) National Wilderness Preservation Bills

4) President Eisenhower's appointment of a committee under the chairmanship of Chief Justice Warren to consider the development of a military museum

5) Opening of exhibition of Sir Winston Churchill's paintings on April 25, 1958
