REPORT ON PRELIMINARY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING THE DONATION TO THE UNITED STATES OF A PLANETARIUM

The Secretary stated that the prospective donors would not like to discuss the subject at this stage, but their wish is to give land, funds for a building and a possible endowment to the United States, and have it administered by the Smithsonian Institution.  There was considerable discussion in regard to the financial burdens of establishing and administering a planetarium.  It was decided to leave to the Executive Committee the determination of the obligations involved without in any way disturbing the prospective donors.

REPORT ON GIFTS AND BEQUESTS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1957 AND FROM JULY 1, 1957 TO DECEMBER 31, 1957

The Secretary stated that there was a formal statement in the printed report of the Secretary. From January 1 to June 30, 1957 twenty-seven items totaling $562,586.18 had been received, and from July 1 to December 31, 1957 twenty-eight items totaling $1,109,196.10 had been received.

REPORT ON PRIVATE FUNDS AND FEDERAL APPROPRIATIONS

REPORT ON FEDERAL BUDGET AS APPROVED AND SUBMITTED TO THE CONGRESS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1959

The Bureau of the Budget has permitted the Smithsonian Institution to request of the Congress $7,355,000 for salaries and expenses for the fiscal year 1959.  This is an increase of $1,355,000 from the amount appropriated this year.  No increase is requested by the Smithsonian Institution of the Bureau of the Budget for any aspect of the work of the Institution except for the United States National Museum to allow the preparation of exhibits and the purchase of necessary cases and equipment for the new Museum of History and Technology.

A reduction of $255,096 in the amount requested for rehabilitation of buildings as compared with the present year is requested because it seemed inappropriate to ask for
