received, and from July 1 to December 31, 1958, thirty-two items totaling $1,428,254.23 had been received, making a grand total of $1,816,284.

REPORT ON FEDERAL BUDGET AS APPROVED AND SUBMITTED TO THE CONGRESS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1960

The Secretary stated that this was a matter on which a great deal of time had been spent. Discussions have been held throughout the year with the heads of all the bureaus, and the letters received about "holding the line" have been taken very seriously. The request submitted was for the same amount of money as last year. The Bureau of the Budget is forwarding this budget to the Congress without change. There are detailed alterations of subheadings. The total amount for salaries and expenses is the same as last year, $7,718,000.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SMITHSONIAN ART COMMISSION

The Secretary stated that he had before him the minutes of the Thirty-sixth Annual Meeting of the Smithsonian Art Commission dated December 2, 1958. On motion by Dr. Greenewalt, seconded by Dr. Haskins, and carried it was

VOTED that the Board of Regents approves the following actions taken by the Smithsonian Art Commission at its meeting on December 2, 1958:

(a) Acceptance of the following works of art:

Bronze, Dr. John Dewey by Alexander Portnoff (1887-1949), offered by Mrs. Alexander Portnoff, accepted for the National Portrait Gallery

Bronze plaque, Paul Wayland Bartlett, N.A., (1865-1925) by John Flanagan, N.A., (1865-1952), offered by Mrs. Armistead Peter, Jr., accepted for the National Collection of the Fine Arts.

Following 18 bronzes and 4 medallions by Paul Wayland Peter, Jr., accepted:
