SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION   1492

RESOLVED, that the Board of Regents has considered the proposed suggestion of Mr. Feighan concerning the establishment of Ellis Island as a National Shrine, and that in view of its very great responsibility in the District of Columbia the Board does not believe it appropriate to take on an activity so far removed from its sphere of interest at this time.

The Secretary was directed to send a copy of this resolution to both the House and Senate Committees concerned, and Mr. Feighan. 

REPORT ON PROGRESS OF MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND TECHNOLOGY

The Secretary briefly outlined the progress that had been made on the construction of the Museum of History and Technology, and stated that unless unexpected delays occur, it was believed the building would be completed, on schedule, on March 20, 1962. The Regents were especially anxious to have assurance that there was no danger of exceeding the amount appropriated for this building. On motion by Senator Saltonstall, seconded by Senator Anderson, and carried it was 

VOTED that the Secretary emphasize to the General Services Administration that it is the hope and expectation that no changes be made in the contracts as specified and that the Board of Regents intends to make the fullest possible use of the funds appropriated and that it expects the General Services Administration to collaborate in this endeavor without requiring more funds to be kept in reserve than are absolutely essential.

Mr. Brooks asked that the members of the Board of Regents be kept informed on the progress of the construction of the Museum of History and Technology, and the Secretary agreed to send reports regularly. 

REPORT ON ADDITIONS TO THE NATURAL HISTORY BUILDING 

The Secretary reviewed the history of the need for additions to the Natural History Building, and stated that the Bureau of the Budget had authorized a request for an appropriation of $13,500,000 for the renovation of the central part of the building and the addition
