REPORT ON PREPLANNING STUDIES FOR THE NATIONAL AIR MUSEUM

It was reported that the General Services Administration has employed the architectural firm of Harbeson, Hough, Livingston and Larson to make preliminary studies and planning cost estimates for a suitable air museum building on the already designated site on The Mall opposite the National Gallery of Art in order that funds in an appropriate amount for preparing plans, including drawings and specifications, may be requested of the Congress.

REPORT ON PREPLANNING STUDIES FOR THE OLD PATENT OFFICE BUILDING TO HOUSE THE NATIONAL COLLECTION OF FINE ARTS AND THE PROPOSED NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY

The Secretary reported that the General Services Administration is conducting a survey on the architectural and engineering features of the Civil Service Commission Building (the old Patent Office Building) preliminary to the development of estimates of the funds that will be required to plan the renovation of the building as an appropriate art museum. As no request has been made for funds for a new Civil Services Building in the 1961 budget it seems to indicate that the remodeling cannot be expected to start for five years. Dr. Brown stated that his committee on the new Portrait Gallery consisting of Senator Fulbright, Mr. Bow and Dr. Haskins had no report at this time as it had only recently been appointed, and had not had a meeting.
