SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 1500

(Appendix II)

February 1, 1960

Dr. Leonard Carmichael
Secretary
Smithsonian Institution
Washington 25, D. C.

Dear Dr. Carmichael:

I take pleasure in informing you of two actions taken by the Board of Regents in executive session on January 19, 1960. One of these actions proposes an amendment of Section (5) of the agreement entered into between the Smithsonian and you under date of April 9, 1952. The other is really in the nature of a reminder to the Board that at an appropriate time before you reach age 65 the question of your retirement be again brought to the attention of the Board of Regents so that it may discuss with you your wishes as of that time, and if it be your desire to retire, to allow the Board ample opportunity to secure the services of your successor.

Will you be so good as to indicate your acceptance of the amendment to your contract voted on January 19? Upon receipt of your acceptance of that amendment, the contract will be considered so amended.

Sincerely,

/s/ Earl Warren
Chancellor
Board of Regents
