WHITE HOUSE HISTORICAL OBJECTS LEGISLATION
   
The Secretary briefly summarized the legislation introduced by Senator Anderson as S. 2422 and enacted as P.L. 87-286 (approved September 22, 1961) that provides for the care and preservation of the historic and artistic contents of the White House by the Smithsonian Institution when they are not in use or on display in the White House. He spoke of the special interest expressed by the White House authorities in this constructive legislation and of their cooperation with the members of the Smithsonian staff.

NATIONAL AIR MUSEUM
   
The Secretary stated he had done his best to have funds for planning the construction of the National Air Museum Building, to be located opposite the National Gallery of Art, included by the Bureau of the Budget in the 1963 Budget. Funds for this purpose were not allowed, but the impression was gained that the Bureau of the Budget would look with favor on the project next year. The possibility that planning money might be obtained from a private individual was mentioned by Dr. Hunsaker and Senator Anderson. The Secretary was directed to confer with Dr. Hunsaker concerning this matter.

NATIONAL CULTURAL CENTER
   
The Secretary reported that Mr. Roger L. Stevens of New York had been made the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Cultural Center. Senator Fulbright pointed out that the new chairman has broad experience and that he will do his best to further the program for the Cultural Center. Senator Fulbright also noted that the project had been redefined on more realistic terms.

ARTS AND INDUSTRIES BUILDING AND PROPOSED NINTH STREET UNDERPASS
   
The Secretary reported that the underpass proposed by the Department of Highways and Traffic of the District of Columbia across The Mall in the line of 9th Street, between Constitution Avenue and Independence Avenue, would necessitate tearing down at least a part of the Arts and Industries Building.
