SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION   1562

VOTED that the Langley Medal of the Smithsonian Institution be awarded to Hugh Latimer Dryden by the Chancellor or his representative, and that the Secretary should arrange an appropriate time and place for the presentation, with the following citation:

Hugh Latimer Dryden: the Regents of the Smithsonian Institution confer on you its Langley Gold Medal for Aerodromics in recognition of your important applications of experimental science to the problems of flight, and for your wise and courageous administration of much of America's research and technical developments that now make possible the conquest of air and space.

OCEANOGRAPHY

The Secretary reported that pending legislation in the House of Representatives, H.R. 8401, introduced by Representative George P. Miller, would extend the Smithsonian Institution's functions in the field of oceanography in various ways and specifically direct that the Smithsonian serve as a national depository for all collections of scientific specimens relevant to the field of marine biology. The Bill had not been initiated by the Smithsonian but would serve to reaffirm the existing depository responsibility of the Institution as well as provide authorization of appropriations for grants to encourage marine research.

SAMUEL H. KRESS FOUNDATION INDENTURE

A superseding Indenture between Samuel H. Kress Foundation and National Gallery of Art and Smithsonian Institution, dated December 9, 1961, was presented for consideration. On motion by Dr. Hunsaker, seconded by Dr. Brown, and carried it was

VOTED that the Board of Regents directs that further information be furnished and that action on the superseding Indenture between Samuel H. Kress Foundation and National Gallery of Art and Smithsonian Institution, dated December 9, 1961, be deferred until the next meeting of the Board.

REPORT ON FEDERAL BUDGET AS APPROVED FOR SUBMISSION TO THE CONGRESS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1963
