SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION   1563

Budget for submission to the Congress for the fiscal year 1963, included a request for $11,354,000 for "Salaries and Expenses" of the Smithsonian Institution as contrasted with $9,125,000 for the fiscal year 1962. The sum of $5,400,000 is requested for remodeling the Civil Service Commission Building for art gallery purposes and the sum of $950,000 is requested for construction and improvements at the National Zoological Park. The total request for construction is $6,350,000 for the fiscal year 1963. The grand total estimate of appropriation included in the Budget for the Institution for the fiscal year 1963 is $17,704,000.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SMITHSONIAN ART COMMISSION

The Secretary stated that each member had before him the minutes of the Thirty-ninth Annual Meeting of the Smithsonian Art Commission dated December 5, 1961. By unanimous motion it was

VOTED that the Board of Regents approves the report of the Smithsonian Art Commission and the following actions taken at its meeting on December 5, 1961:

(a) Acceptance of the following works of art:

Two bronzes, The Bear Tamer and Head of Kid, by Paul Bartlett, N.A. (1865-1925). Offered by Miss Mary Bowditch, Boston, Massachusetts

Bronze, Napoleon I (1769-1821) by Launt Thompson (1833-1894). Offered by Dr. Gifford B. Pinchot, Upperco, Maryland

Oil, Mother (Annie Williams Gandy) by Thomas C. Eakins (1844-1916). Bequest of Mrs. Edward Pearson Rodman, through Miss Helen W. Gandy, Washington, D.C.
