his country in the United States Navy in World War I, and in World War II served the same branch by translations of important Japanese documents. Some of these translations proved vital to the defense of the Nation. His career was devoted to scholarship in the field of oriental studies, and his work over 35 years at the Freer Gallery of Art is recognized with respect and admiration by his colleagues the world over.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That these resolutions be entered in the minutes of the Board and that a copy be sent to Mrs. Wenley.

On motion by Dr. Hunsaker, seconded by Mr. Kirwan, and carried it was

VOTED that the above resolutions be recorded in the minutes and a copy be sent to Mrs. Wenley.

The Secretary then referred to a biographical sketch of Dr. John A. Pope appended to the agenda. He stated that Dr. Pope had been with the Freer Gallery of Art of the Smithsonian Institution for a number of years, and is a distinguished man in this field. Dr. Fleming asked if Dr. Pope had been carrying on Mr. Wenley's work, and was informed he had. On motion by Dr. Fleming, seconded by Dr. Brown, and carried it was

VOTED that the Board of Regents consents to the appointment by the Secretary of Dr. John A. Pope as Director of the Freer Gallery of Art, as of June 1, 1962.

The Secretary then reported that Dr. A. Remington Kellogg, Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and Director of the United States National Museum, would reach the mandatory retirement age of 70 as of October 31, 1962. He indicated that Dr. Kellogg was in the Room. On motion by Dr. Greenewalt, seconded by Dr. Fleming, and carried unanimously it was

VOTED that the Regents request the Secretary to express their appreciation to Dr. Kellogg, Assistant Secretary, for his long and distinguished service to the Smithsonian Institution.

The Secretary recommended the appointment of Dr. Albert C. Smith, now Director of the Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution, as Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution effective November 1, 1962. A biographical sketch of Dr. Smith was before the Board. On motion by Dr. Fleming, seconded by Dr. Greenewalt, and carried it was
