SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 1590 Senator Saltonstall and carried it was VOTED that the Board of Regents authorizes the Chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee, the Chairman of the Executive Committee and the Secretary to arrange a meeting with the General Services Administration and the contractor (Norair) on the Museum of History and Technology Building to plan for the occupancy of the Building and the beginning of the installation of exhibits by the Smithsonian Institution staff with the view of insuring agreement that such occupancy would not delay completion of the building and would not result in any claim against the Government for additional time or money. BRONZE TABLET FOR MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND TECHNOLOGY Each member had before him a suggestion of the way the names of the people concerned with the construction of the building might be listed on a bronze tablet. After a brief discussion the suggestion was approved with the amendment that the name of the general contractor be added and with the amendment that the titles, "Honorable and Doctor," be omitted. DATE OF OPENING FOR MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND TECHNOLOGY There was discussion concerning this matter with references to the National Gallery of Art's dedication and the recent showing of the Mona Lisa. On motion by Senator Saltonstall, seconded by Dr. Fleming, and carried it was VOTED that the Board of Regents appoints a subcommittee consisting of the Chancellor, the Chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee and the Secretary with full authority to set the date of the opening and make plans for the dedication. QUESTION OF PLANNING SYMBOLIC ORRERY FOR MALL SIDE OF BUILDING The Secretary described the background for the use of an orrery or planetarium. This device, representing dynamically in miniature the motions of the solar system, would be an appropriate symbol for a great American museum of history, science and technology.
