SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION 

The Chancellor raised the question of possible vandalism. Both Dr. Brown and Dr. Burden assured him the point had been discussed with the architect. As the shaft is proposed to be of highly polished stone, it would be hard to climb. It would be sixteen feet high. 

On motion by Dr. Brown, seconded by Dr. Hunsaker, and carried it was

VOTED that the Board of Regents approves the recommendation of the Subcommittee on the Orrery that the services of José de Rivera be engaged to construct the sculptured exhibit it has approved for the south facade of the Museum of History and Technology, and further approves the expenditure of up to $130,000 for this work from the unobligated balance of the Museum of History and Technology construction appropriation. 

WEST WING OF MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

The Secretary reported that the construction contract for the West Wing had been awarded to the George Hyman Construction Company, that had built the East Wing well within the amount of money available and within the time allowed. The estimated completion date was given as September, 1965. 

NATIONAL AIR MUSEUM

The Secretary stated that the Committee appointed by the Regents to select an architect had considered a good many firms and had selected the firm of Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum of St. Louis as architects for the National Air Museum and the local firm of Mills, Petticord and Mills as associate architects. 

Included in the preliminary cost estimate for the superstructure was the figure of $7,700,000 for a two-level garage under the authorized site. This garage would provide parking for 1,400 cars. This is still in the planning stage and further reports will be made at a later meeting of the Board.
