SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION VOTED that the Board of Regents recommends an amendment to S. 1513 to vest responsibility in the Smithsonian Institution (Bureau of American Ethnology) to acquire and publish such material. PROPOSED LEGISLATION 1) Authorization to purchase reprints and pay page charges 2) Authorization to hire alien scientists On motion by Dr. Burden, seconded by Dr. Greenewalt, and carried it was VOTED that the Board of Regents requests the Congressional Regents to introduce legislation to provide authorization to purchase reprints and pay page charges; and authorization to hire alien scientists. PROPOSAL TO ESTABLISH A SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM IN THE WEST The Secretary reported that Mr. Richard Tripp of Albuquerque had written to the Congressional delegations from the Western States concerning his proposal that there be established in the West a nationally-owned, earth-science museum, either as part of the Smithsonian or as a separate entity. Under existing law the Smithsonian has neither the authority nor the funds to undertake such an objective. There was a brief discussion of the merits of establishing museums outside Washington at this time and the consensus of the Regents' views was against such expansion at this time. It was decided, however, to call this proposal to Senator Anderson's attention and if he objects to a negative reply to Mr. Tripp, to postpone action until the next meeting of the Board of Regents. ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SMITHSONIAN ART COMMISSION The Secretary stated that each member had before him the minutes of the Forty-first Annual Meeting of the Smithsonian Art Commission dated December 3, 1963. By unanimous motion it was VOTED that the Board of Regents approves the report of the Smithsonian Art Commission and the following actions taken at its meeting on December 3, 1963: (a) Acceptance of the following works of art: Oil, group portrait of Anna Maria Mabie, John Henry Mabie, and George Winfield Mabie by Undetermined Artist.
