NIGHT INSTRUMENT FLIGHT
OUT-AND-BACK

FLIGHT Night/Fam 2  2.6 hours

Purpose: Provide the MS with the opportunity to become familiar with the operational environment of a night out-and-back flight

WEATHER MINIMA T-38 Standard

PREREQUISITE 
- MS completion of Night/Fam 1, Inst/Fam flights through 5.
- MS review night flying physiology.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES. For the MS:
-REFAMILIARIZE MS WITH SENSORY AND EQUIPMENT LIMITATION IN A NIGHT IFR ENVIRONMENT AND LIMITATIONS OF ENROUTE FIELDS AT NIGHT.
-DIRECT APPROACHES IN A NIGHT ENVIRONMENT.
BE ABLE TO PLAN, FILE, AND BRIEF PILOT ON ALL ASPECTS OF OUT-AND-BACK FLIGHTS, INCLUDING FUEL/TIME REQUIREMENTS BASED UPON FORECAST WIND/WEATHER. 

PREFLIGHT
Pilot: 
- BRIEF CONDUCT OF FLIGHT AND FLIGHT PLAN.
- REVIEW PROBLEMS UNIQUE TO NIGHT FLIGHT.
- BRIEF SAFETY ITEMS --O2 CONNECTIONS AND FLOW, ENGINE EMERGENCY, EJECTION PROCEDURES, STOWAGE OF EQUIPMENT.
- BRIEF ELECTRICAL/LIGHTNING MALFUNCTIONS

MS:
- CALCULATE TAKEOFF AND LANDING DATES (900 LBS LANDING).
- FILE FLIGHT PLAN (REVIEW WEATHER).
- REVIEW ALL COMMUNICATIONS, CHECKLISTS, AND EMERGENCIES.
REVIEW DIVERT PROCEDURES.

CONDUCT OF FLIGHT
Pilot: 
- FLY PLANNED FLIGHT AS DIRECTED BY MS.
- FLY APPROACH AS DIRECTED BY MS. 
- SIMULATE ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION/LIGHT FAILURE.
- SIMULATE FIRE IN FLIGHT

MS: 
- PLAN FLIGHT
- CONDUCT CHECKLIST AND COMMUNICATIONS OPERATIONS.
DIRECT FLIGHT IN ACCORDANCE WITH FLIGHT PLAN. 
- DIRECT FLIGHT IN ACCORDANCE WITH FLIGHT PLAN. 
- MONITOR FLIGHT PARAMETERS AND PROGRESS. 
- USE FLASHLIGHT DURING SIMULATED ELECTRICAL FAILURES.
- DIRECT APPROACH.
- AS CONDITIONS PERMIT, PILOTS MAY ALLOW THE MS TO FLY THE AIRPLANE AT ALTITUDES ABOVE 5,000 FEET AGL IN VFR CONDITIONS. 

DEBRIEF: 
- Discuss each primary objective.
- Discuss any deviations from SOP made in flight.
Review MS progress.
