June 21 MSFC trip to visit OSTA-2 Clark Owen Bob McAnnally BLDG 4201, RM 529 • HW available: MEA Consists of 3 "pieces" - All mounted within the box on the pallet, & serviced by the MEA's self-contained cooling, power, etc., & controlled by MEA's sequencing system. [[sketch]] Top View Furnaces Aft Acoustic Levitator Battery SW [[/sketch]] MEA-1 = Acoustic Levitator (8 samples, each automatically in turn inserted into the standing waves, heated to molten, & cooled) MEA-2 = Isothermal furnace (3 experiments carried out simulataneously in the 3 modules w/in this furnace) MEA-3 = Gradient Furnace (3 experiment modules, w/ experiments automatically sequenced) Cycling the STBY/ON switch to "ON" starts a MEA experiment (MEA-1, -2, or -3). They can only be executed in order....Crew starts MEA-1.... It completes & #2 can be started anytime thereafter by taking momentary sw to "ON" a 2nd time....Once it completes, MEA-3 can be initiated by same switch. → Need to understand what happens when that switch is taken to ON. e.g.: ① If MEA-1 shuts down before completion, should switch be cycled? Will it start MEA-2? ② What happens if switch is cycled during data take? [] (no problem -won't sequence to next exp until complete) []
