Mission 51-C Crew Station/Crew Equipment
Crew Debriefing Highlights

Subject debriefing was held February 1, 1985, in the Mission Operations Control Room. MF/D. M. German queried the crew. The questions asked, and the crew responses follow:

Comm
Q. A plate clip was added to the MHA (Multiple Headset Adapter) which allows the MHA to be worn. Any crew comments on this item?

A. the clip worked well, It was loose for entry; It was clipped to a foot loop on entry.

Q. Any comments on Communications?

A. Handheld microphones were used considerably. Their quality varies depending on location of the crewmember. There is feedback. When the SMU in middeck was turned down, HHM got better. The HHM operated badly early in mission but got better later. There is a need to evaluate Comm in Long Duration SIM. There was alot of "bells and whistles" in the audio.

Crew Provisions

Q. Crew comments are requested on usage, adequacy, and accessibility of clothing, tools, tissues.

A. New tools are available which are considered better than the Allen Wrenches in the IFM tool kit. Onizuka recommended their usage.

The IFM locker should be relocated to a position where it is not behind the treadmill.

The Foot Restraints (installed) peeled off. The crew had the same problem with the in-orbit seat restraints. It is "good equipment" but there needs to be improved attachment (such as buckles). Now that several crews have used these items and all agree to their usefulness, T. K. Mattingly recommends a permanent high quality design be implemented. The locations were "real good." In addition to using the installed foot restraints, the crew used the velcro straps that were stowed.
