These assets are accounted for by Rockwell in their Logistics Inventory Management System (LIMS). Lockhead Space Operations Center (LSOC), under contract to the NASA/Kennedy Space Center (KSC), is responsible for managing logistics Space Shuttle inventory at KSC. These assets are accounted for by LSOC in their Shuttle Inventory Management System (SIMS). The LIMS is independent of the SIMS. All receipt, issue, or shipping documents are routed to the Rockwell Launch Support Services Contractor (LSSC) logistics group at NASA/KSC to update LIMS. Rockwell manages Orbiter flight spares inventory levels, orders replacement items, tracks repairables, and updates stock levels in the LIMS. Flight spares that are not available at KSC are requested from the Rockwell LSSC logistics group at KSC. This interface is provided by the Logistics Critical Items Management Center (LCIMC), which is a joint Lockheed Space Operation Center, NASA, and Rockwell operation to coordinate, track, and status flight hardware and material shortages.

C. Management (Direct and Indirect)

The KSC technician, inspector, and engineering ratios are

Technician to inspector 2.7:1
Technician to engineer 2.0:1

The distribution ratio of indirect to direct manpower is 1.4:1.

D. Personnel Training

The training courses provided at KSC are basically broken down into:

1. Familiarization Courses - These courses provide general information on a system or operation.

2. Operational Training Courses - These courses provide the necessary background, operational procedure, and tool-handling information for functional operation of equipment or procedures.

3. Maintenance Training Courses - These courses provide an individual with initial knowledge of a specific system or subsystem. These are detailed courses and are designed to give an individual enough systems knowledge to perform fault-isolation tasks and repair at the component level.

4. Skills Certification Training Courses - These are skills courses which provide training that leads to a specific skill level. These courses culminate in a formal certification that the individual has reached the prescribed skill level as cited in a NASA/KSC specification, contract specification, or other appropriate document.

All skill level courses and certain prescribed familiarization, operational, and maintenance training courses carry a recertification requirement based on time and performance.
