April 17 1978 - Monday - 37° at 6:30 Cloudy - some very light rain showers during day. To 7:30 Mass. I worked at Greenhouse 9/12. Mailed soil sample to Conn. Extension Service. Wes took balance of compost and transferred new compost to old bed. He took out two big ilax from front of house. Pinchbeck delivered [[?]], food, peat & chips. Wes limed veg garden. I finished cultivating daylilies front garden fence. Put crescentia in cold frame. 1979 - Tuesday - 40° at 6 AM - cloudy - 3 squirrels on terrace. Where do they come from? Extra male chased Mallard pair. Caught No. 37 squirrel. Wes finished dam realign. Great wall except for one stone - needs a topper. Started filling behind it. I sewed rose print blouse in early morning as too cold and damp to go out. After lunch I put leek, cabbage and broccoli in coldframe. Spinach coming up in veg garden. Pruned weeping birch, Spruce and pine near shed. 1980 - Thursday - 28° at 5:30. Clear - apparently no frost, cold, sunny day - windy - warmer late afternoon. Pinchbeck delivered 2 Arborvitae - 3 [[?] - chips - 50 lb. each Holly tone and lime. We planted the arborvitae at entrance & moved two of our own spruce to back roadside - I worked at Greenhouse 9:30-12. Ricky and I bought chicken wire at Ridgefield Supply - will try to make fence for my tree. 1981 - Good Friday. 50° at 6 AM. Cloudy - some light rain off and on. Shop hour. Wes dug out one of the Japanese maples! The Ilex Glabra - taxus from steps - I dug scilla - Anemone blanda - Star of Bethlehem - hosta - We took them to Bogus for holing in - surrounded the bushes with more fences - a hard job getting posts in - after lunch and nap to 3 o'clock service. Backhoe of concrete contractor was at Bogus. Plans to put in foundation Monday. 1982 - Saturday - 56° at 7 AM - Cloudy - looked like rain - then more sunshine - rain at night. Put brackets under overhang. House cleaning. I went to Basics - To Marcus and bank. Fairgrounds look messy - lots of junk still around after the auction. Moved leafmold to terrace wall garden - planted onions there - first onions in vegetable garden east coming up. Eating our lettuce for sandwiches/salad. Brought odd blue phlox down from top cliff to Woodwalk. Joe Haley & friend Phil Wells come tomorrow to wheelbarrow dirt. April 18 1978 - 32° at 6 AM - beautiful morning Kitchen clock returned by Warren Malkin yesterday - ticking well. Worked outdoors - Wes rototilled veg garden and raked it. Trimmed bushes along overflow bank. I cultivated gardens back of house and perennial garden - everything very slow - daffodils coming out. Men stripped forms from dam and worked on overflow retaining wall - went to Staging Committee (Plant Sale) meeting at Greenhouse 1:30 - 4:30. Cold & cloudy late P.M. 1979. Wednesday - 27° at 5:30. Beautiful morning. Watched pair Mallards and extra male being warded off corn and pond bank. Single Canada Goose was chased by Wes. Wes repaired pond stone walls, after completing the fill behind realignment dam wall. He cut off tree growing into water at pipe inlet All ready to put in dam & raise water level. I transplanted tomato & pepper plants - under cellar lights - gave 6 peppers to Mary. Planted beets & carrots in big garden. George Stephenson stopped by. 1980 - Friday - 28° at 5:30. Light frost - Greigii tulips down but came up again. Mostly fair day. cloud and a few drops in afternoon. Wes planted three of our spruce - 2 at West End, one on [[?]] point. Lifted daylilies at left side of garden gate raised soil and replanted some. I planted onions bringing in compost. I went to bank and Agway and had copies made for Garden Club. A little stiff after the busy day. 1981 - Holy Saturday 52° at 5:30 - Up early as needed to get shop hour in before Joe Keller comes. Foggy. Wes chased 2 Canada Geese before breakfast. Became fair, very windy, warm day, high 70. Joe Keller here [[?]] compost, on far flower bed - spread stones and dirt behind overflow wall - cleaned up back corner - took out stump of stolen spruce at West End - a lot in a half day. We shopped Basics - Agway for birdseed - Marcus & Wes cut big lawn and across little bridge. I cultivated flower beds. 1982 - Sunday - 46° at 6 AM - Sunny - beautiful day - To 8 o'clock Mass. Transplanted Japanese maple - 3 wild crab - the balsam to south slope. Put black pine (?) in Japanese maple hole in top enclosure. Joe Haley and Phil Bowman here 12/3 to move topsoil from roadside to proposed perennial garden site - Mike had brought over his wheelbarrow luckily - boys received $7.00/hour, to Wes horror! But job is done. I went to St Elizabeth Seton at 4 pm for harp-flute concert - Have had lunch on deck last three days - put on couple screens.
