October 4

1978 - Wednesday - 47° at 7 AM - Cloudy - light rain in afternoon.
Wes spread last of topsoil. I pulled carrots, leeks, and beets for Saturday's show. Beets not good - carrots immature. Picked strawberries. Called on Ruth Sharp in afternoon - not home. Shortened new gray slacks. Alex & Helen took us to The Inn for dinner for our anniversary.

1979 - Thursday - 50° at 6 AM - beautiful fall day. After shop hour, Wes cleaned gutters - raked leave from terrace - locked sheds - planted bulbs in front of terrace, putting tulips in wire cages - thinned perennial garden of bergamot, heliopses - wood daisy - planted allium there and relocated mess "Miss Lingard" phlox. Cut grass in front of terrace to furrow leaves. Roberts of Greenwich picked up terrace furniture - will redo in brown. Brought into breezeway [[?]] - last of outdoor plants we will save.

1980 - Saturday. 50° at 6:30 - rain during night 4/10 inch - glad to have it - water going over dam. Shop hour - did wash - made pillow for Ruth Sharp's crossstitch cover - to Ridgefield - bought meat - left prescription for new glasses at Martin's Optical - papers to recycling - liquor and bananas at Shop & Shop. Cut grass over bridges - trimmed outside fence - behind garden etc. Cool but warm in sun planted small allium. 

1981 - Sunday - 38° at 6 AM. - Clear - Cool beautiful day - Put heat on whole house and fire in livingroom as Eileen came at noon. Had gone to 8 o'clock Mass.
Had lunch (Eileen on diet) took walk thru Hemlock Hills. Eileen advised on placing pictures. She left at 5:25. We finished checking the house costs book. Saw first episode of "A Town like Alice."

1982 - Monday - 56° at 6:45 - Beautiful day - dry - we need rain now. Wes drove me to work at Ballard Garden - then he went to John Scott's to see his paintings and their home grounds. Wes picked me up at noon. After lunch and nap played golf - course beautiful - scored bad. I weeded Sweet Woodruff at cliff edge. Put pictures of Ireland in order - Numbered and labeled them.

October 5

1978 - Thursday - 52° at 6 AM - Foggy - at least 50 ducks - cleared about noon.
Prepared Ivy bunny and chrysanthemum for show Saturday - Picked more leeks. Called on Ruth Sharp at 2 o'clock. She had bronchial pneumonia - on to town to pick up charm bracelet and cleaning - Back to see Wes had cut grass - I found [[?]] on back and side and along fence

1979 - Friday 54° at 6:15 AM - Foggy - lots of ducks - We're running out of corn again. Packed for trip - left at 9:30 for Washington - arrived at 3:30 - 316 miles. Went thru terrific rain around Baltimore - heard in evening Amtrak cancelled there account power failure - we saw no lightning. Marriott Twin Bridges for cocktail - dinner - bed. 

1980 - Sunday - 42° at 6 AM.  Partly cloudy AM - cleared PM. To 8 o'clock Mass. Prepared dinner, fire, terrace for Eileen's visit - here at 11:30. Went to Bogus Road property - walked land - noticed dogwoods - striped maple - evergreen ground cover not known to us. Back at house for dinner - pleasant day. Eileen left about 4 pm. Lots of Mallards. Eileen brought us bread 

1981 - Monday 50° at 6 AM - Cloudy - cool. I went to Bloomingdale's Stamford for talk on travels in Ireland - home at noon after a stop at Pat Coller's. Wes put up big mirror over buffet - Mirror and pictures in bedroom. John Oliver and Bruce and Ellie Spengarn here at 9 but didn't do any work. Mike finished spraying house and deck - looks great. Country Design ladies here PM on wallpaper - blinds - draperies
Cut grass and wood. Made coffee cake.

1982 - Tuesday - 48° at 6 AM - Some morning clouds then sunny - warm - beautiful if you like it dry. I played golf with ladies - last time - followed by lunch. Wes took off most screens and repaired the upstairs bathroom faucet. After a nap, I cut the grass - Wes placed stakes on south side for future rhododendrons. Threw zucchini and pepper plants on compost - have their final pickings for dinner. Picked a couple tomatoes.
