April 1

1983 - Good Friday - 28° at 6:30 - Cloudy but sun to break thru.  Additional Federal tax of 5¢ a gallon goes on gasoline.  Cold sunny day.
To Pinchbeck - picked up flat lead birdbath for St. Frances spot - bought gasoline @ $1.28/gal. - shopped Brunette's - Grand Central & PDQ Copier closed so no copies of "Ivy Wreath" material.  Home to transplant Wild Crab brought up from The Ponds from Shade Garden to Wood Knoll - filled up its former hole - To 3 o'clock Service for Good Friday

1984 - Sunday - 29° at 6:15 but sunny.  Pair Canada Geese and Wood Ducks on pond at breakfast time.
Beautiful day - temperature went over 50°.  To 8 o'clock Mass.  Read papers in Solar until it was too warm in there.  Transplanted lettuces (bought at Garden Club meeting last week) into individual pots.  To movie "Greystoke" (King of the Apes) in Danbury at 2 PM = beautiful scenery - To Stoddards at 6:30 for dinner, picking up Mary Luke who had her right foot in cast after a fall.

1985 - Monday - 32° at 6 A - Cloudy and cold - some sprinkles in afternoon.
Washed - ironed - to bank, Marcus & Waldbaum.
Transplanted Calendula into 4" pots - planted 4 trays of Tomato plants.  After lunch outside - Wes moved more chips, to shed path - Transplanted small spruce from top of big rock north ledge and put one of junipers from driveway in its place.  I moved crocus to road edge, Compost path and under front walk light - cleared and weeded and picked leaves from wall garden - 3 yellow violets out.

1986 - Tuesday - 42° at 6:30.  Fair.  We had a [[?bad]] night - Wes coughed a lot - I blew - disappointing as we thought we were getting over our colds.  No Mass as going to NYC to Dr Espy.  To Purdy's at 8:45 - found a parking place.  9:23 train to Grand Central - on time - subway to 68th St.  Walked to 69th - waited a bit for Dr Espy but taken at 11:35 - good reports - no pressure on cataract for me.  Change my glasses prescription - Wes' pressure was fine - lunch at Oyster Bar - 12:48 train to Purdys - home at 2:30.  Nap - Went over cliff - raked path - Hepaticas coming out.

1987 - Wednesday - 34° at 6 AM - Cloudy - became fair - windy - cooler than last few days.  No Mass as leaving at 8:45 for Purdy's - 9:23 train to Grand Central - subway to 68th St - walked to Dr Espy on 69th for eye exam - both of us very good - lunch at Fonckers, just above Bloomingdale's on Lexington - walked to 53 Madison/Fifth to look at street park - don't believe it was Paler Park - walked to Orvis on 45th near Vanderbilt - Wes bought shoes - to Grand Central Hoffritz where bought nail clippers - 2:48 train to Purdy's - home at 4:30 - played our new cassettes in car - good - tired but content.


April 2

1983 - Holy Saturday - 29° at 6 AM.  Sun on Solar at 6:15 - Beautiful day - did a lot of outdoor work.
Put Halts Plus (5,000 s.f.) on grass - need more - Wes split wood - fed all the Hemlock, Azaleas and Leucothoe on South side - transplanted Broccoli and Lettuce into outside beds - planted onion sets and spinach.  Brought up Hepatica and Rattlesnake Plantain from below cliff and planted them along electric line on Wood Knoll.  Rain predicted tomorrow, so these were good chores for today.

1984 - Monday - 30° at 6 AM - Fair - Beautiful day.  Clouded up around sunset - high 50's.
Tony Ongaro came at 8 to discuss path on south side - Belgian Clock for edging will be the problem.
Energy audit man from Snet here at 9:30 to go over house - will send report.  Wes had taken car for a wash.  I had a haircut - went to bank & Brunette.  After lunch Wes split wood - we moved wood chips to cover weeds along road above mailbox - picked up sticks.

1985 - Tuesday - 32° at 6 AM - Partly cloudy.  Watched female Wood Duck flying over cliff - hope she goes to box.  Cold windy day, off & on sun.  To Mass.  I worked at Ballard Garden 9-12 - good crew came.  Shopped Stop & Sho9p enroute home.  Wes had transplanted Eileen's laurel to Wood Knoll bank - later moved Clethra to Bog Garden parth - put Rhododendron in Clethra's place and deciduous Azalea at edge of garden room.  Wes dug holes for blueberry bushes.  We saw the deer had eaten tulips & daylilies behind raised beds.  I planted baby Leucothoe in Garden Club deep pots.

1986 - Wednesday - 47° at 6 AM.  Partly cloudy - became a beautiful day - sunny & warm - a wonderful run of good weather.  Shop hour and plant chores - to bank and Marcus.  Wes dug holes on North Slope for laurel we plan to buy - connected the water pump - I watered lettuce and onions we had planted - started cultivation of flower beds - continued that work in afternoon.
TWA plane had hole blown thru approaching Athens Airport - 5 people died - all Americans

1987 - Thursday - 28° at 6 AM - Fair, cool.  Wes drove me to Ridgebury & Route 116 where Muriel Pedersen was waiting and she drove to Wave Hill for Propagation Workshop of zones II - III - IV of GCA, good talks - lunch there - walked around grounds, admired Greenhouse and Alpine House - stopped at Rosedale for polyethylene/woven garden cloth - labels & bowl for cactus plants.  Home at 4.  Wes had repaired Kitchen faucet - raked and picked up all sticks on lawn.
