May 9

1983 - Monday - 40° at 6 AM - Cloudy - Little over 1/2 inch rain in gauge at 7 AM - Cleared in afternoon but very cold - worked with jacket over sweater.
I worked with Madeline in Ballard Garden in morning. Wes was in shop. He took car to Lou Nargiso after lunch for 4 new tires. Cut lawn. Edged upper lawn and Wes cut out sod from south front - moved it above white pine. Put all tomato plants in solar as cold night expected

1984 - Wednesday - 49° at 6:30 - slept late. Cloudy. Another tenth of inch rain in gauge. Became sunny cool very windy day. Did work wash. Wes took out stones from wood pile path - made a path along cliff from deck to wood pile - put chips on both - Hollandia had advised against using fresh chips near plantings. Glass fireplace screen unstable in livingroom. Moved Bog Rosemary to Bog Garden and planted Ed Wright's new mystery plant there. Evening Grosbeaks here for about a week

1985 - Thursday - 36° at 6 AM - Cold night - Beautiful day - cool - hazy over the Hudson in mid-day but clear here when we returned. To Mass. Left for my 11 o'clock appointment with Dr Jacobs - blood pressure 135/75 - heart OK - have lab work done in Ridgefield - to Wave Hill at noon/1:30 - beautiful area & garden - to Yonkers Cross County Shopping Center - Red Coach Grill is now Mexican, so we had hamburger at Burger King - to Nobel's - arranged for delivery of pool on Monday - bought Cinnamon Fern - American Ginger - Dill - home to see Hawsie Nash in drive - showed her ground cover Chrysogonum virginianum - gave her 2 Calendula.

1986 - Friday - 40° at 6 AM. Cold night - beautiful sun rise and day. I went to bank and Stop and Shop.
Wes continued clearing upper slope - piling up stones. I cut South grass - otherwise worked on plants to leave them for weekend. Eileen took Boo to Craighead - came here about 4 o'clock with a load of bread. We walked about before cocktail time

1987 - Saturday - at David Finney Inn, New Castle, Del. beautiful day. Bus at 9 AM to Odessa - Toured 2 Historic houses - good guides - terrible Victorian furniture in Museum - bus back to New Castle lunch at Finney Inn Courtyard - toured Amstel, Old Dutch & Read houses - Courthouse for interesting history of Delaware.  
Episcopalian Church - nap at Inn - cocktails in our room with Eileen & Rosses - dinner at Inn - great trouble dividing one bill among six or five (without Janet White) guests - walk to river - bed. Good day.


May 10

1983 - Tuesday - 35° at 6 AM - Clear & cold! To Mass. Busy day. Planted the 3 Dahlia bulbs for September show = Ed Wright's daisy* - ironed - washed hair - Men finished grading road to Fred Grouse' and Wes asked them to move the two big stones at north side to spot behind oak tree - looks good - Wes cut down some trees there - saplings. I watered new plants on south side and vegetable garden - planted final onions - put out last of sunflower seed. (* Bellis perennis Europeanus identified at Nobel Nursery.)

1984 - Thursday - 42° at 6 AM.
Cloudy AM - Partly sunny - warm then but cool and breezy. To Mass.
Wes completed stone wall off deck on south east side - looks good - now needs backfill. I planted Dahlia bulbs in new perennial garden - transplanted more alpine yellow violets from wall garden - watered - mixed soil for Cornus Kousa hole. To Waccabuc at 6:30 - Sattlers hosts for dinner. Mary Luke also - Home at 11 pm.

1985 - Friday - 53° at 6 AM - warm, sunny day - high wind dried everything.
Wes finished putting the electric line in for the pool and also finished the stone wall on the south. Dug the hole for the pool. I planted the cinnamon fern in the bog & the ginger along bog path. To Fine Framing - picked up our two prints - bank - Stop & Shop - home for lunch. Watered everything I could - the pump ran out. Put 5 tomato plants in raised bed - moved all plants out of Solar and under deck and into kitchen for the weekend. Warm evening.

1986 - Saturday - Cool beautiful morning - Eileen with us. Left about 8 o'clock for Keeler Tavern - trip to Bucks County - bus left Tavern at 8:40 for New Hope, Pa. - toured Parry Museum - admired pair of Mallards off sidewalk! - interesting town - to Mercer Museum where there was also a Folk Craft show - to Warrington Motor Lodge for the night - had Scotch with Rosses and McKeons - Eileen's Punch Bottle was good.

1987 - Sunday - at New Castle, Delaware - David Finney Inn - beautiful day. To 8 o'clock Mass at St Peters (2 flights of stairs to get in!)  Breakfast on the Inn - left at 9:30 for Brandywine Museum - beautiful setting on the river - lunch there - on to Longwood Gardens - walked through Conservatory - Hillside Garden - waterfall - Italian water garden etc - all very beautiful - warm lovely day lots of people account Mothers Day - left at 3 pm for home - arrived Keeler Tavern 4:15 - Eileen's car covered with tree juice and drippings - Home for drink & dinner. Opened skylights - all plants seemed to have survived.
