May 13

1983 - Friday - 44 at 7 AM - Cloudy- became fair and a little warmer.  Did wash.  To Stop and Shop for groceries - high prices - Thomas Protein $1.19 - lettuce $1.39 - cauliflower $1.99 - bananas 55¢ - Wes to Marcus - tried to have chainsaw repaired at Nutmeg - no luck.
We planted flowers bought at Garden-in-the-Woods - Rearranged stones on wall garden top - bringing couple new ones from top of hill - looks good.  Watered all spring transplants - well ran dry.

1984 - Sunday - 42° at 6 AM - Sun coming up thru fog.  Looks beautiful.  Fair sunny day until 5:30 PM when clouds and wind came.  Rained during night
busy day - Wes finished backfilling new wall.  I brought in more compost - transplanted day lily from shade garden to left of new steps.  Had to move ferns planted yesterday as too sunny in deck southeast corner.  Wes finished spreading pine mulch.  Transplanted Narcissus from Triangle big box to North holding bed.

1985 - Monday - 64° at 6:15 - Cloudy, became sunny and hot - humid: Wes put screens on
I worked at the Greenhouse and in the Garden, planting Calendula and Matricaria Golden Ball and Pyrethrum Painted Daisy.  Shopped Stop & Shop, enroute home.  Pool was delivered by Nobel's and Wes had it in the ground and was spreading dirt around it.  Phoned Howard Castle re electric line.  Bud Wright came to go over tile work.  I cut grass.  Went with Hawsie Nash to Hollandia to look at plants for front of Ballard Greenhouse.

1986 - Tuesday - 48° at 6 AM - Partly cloudy - cleared to a beautiful day - Sunny and breezy - We need rain. 
To Mass.  I did ironing.  Wes went to Hannery's for gasoline for the car and cans - super was $1.11/gallon.  I took the strawberry plants we're donating to the Garden Mart to the Greenhouse - on to Hawsie Nash's - she drove to Green Fingers Garden Club meeting - She gave a talk on growing - I handed her the props - home at 5.  Wes had taken stones from north slope - area looks clean - he mulched (shredded) another pile of leaves there - one more to go.

1987 - Wednesday - 44° at 6 AM - Fair - beautiful cool day.  Put all plants outdoors.  Wes moved the hydrant cover near front door to a more front position to make turning it on easier.  I did wash & ironing.  Wes' throat and cold bad.  He drove me to Purdy's for the 11:23 train to Grand Central - had 2 pm appointment with Dr Wiedel - all OK - he is in new office 109 East 67 Street - convenient location.
Called on Anne Nappa - we talked about Texaco's bankruptcy - Caught the 3:48 train to Purdy's - Wes met me there.  Wright had done second spraying.


May 14

1983 - Saturday - 48° at 5:30.  Garden Mart Day.  Beautiful sunny day.  I worked from 8:30 - 11:30 at the Plant Sale - at Pinchbeck's - bought Martha Washington geranium from them and a Ballard day lily and Thyme.  Wes cleaned shop - vacuumed den kitchen and Solar.
After lunch I planted the new plants, watered vegetable bins.  We went over the cliff - brought back fern - Hepatica - Bloodroot - Mitrewort - small Rattlesnake Plantain - Ground Pine.

1984 - Monday - 48° at 6:30 - Fair cool day.  Cold wind toward evening.  Quarter inch of rain in gauge.
To Bethel for sunflower seed - have to keep the feeders going for the birds - also to market for groceries.
Wes had a shop hour - I gathered plants for Garden Mart donations from Gizella and me.  We pruned dead limb from beech over perennial garden - I transplanted more Narcissus - Wes rebuilt one end of new wall - I moved last Hosta Ellie gave us from leaf mold pile to Wood Knoll - Hollandia delivered 15 more bags of mulch.

1985 - Tuesday.  58° at 6 AM.  Clear.  Sun 5:39 - 8:05 - over the hill to us at 6:13.  No Mass as I worked at Ballard Garden 8:30 to noon - planted Pyrethrum from Greenhouse.  Picked up Aquilegia from Chris Clark's - watered.
Wes had brought out furniture for deck and the gas grill.  He cleaned up brush behind garden room - turned over compost - brought remaining old compost to shade garden - I dug it in with peat - we took out Narcissus from that area and put them in holes Wes dug on North cliff - planted Ageratum and Basil Greco Mounds - Gizella's Lambs Ears.

1986 - Wednesday - 36° at 6 AM - Beautiful day - sunny lovely temperature - dry naturally.
Cut the grass - planted a couple tomato plants.  Wes drove me to Purdy's to catch 11:23 train - had 2 pm appointment with Dr. Wiedel - OK - come back 6 months.  Wes met me at Purdy's - train was 10 minutes late.  Wes transplanted small Eunonymous from "Aster" area near wall to a spot nearer Wood Knoll path - he spread leaf chips in that area.

1987 - Thursday.  36° at 5 AM.  Cold.  Up early as leaving at 6:20 to pick up Rosses and on to Tarrytown - Sleepy Hollow Restoration Bus to Alana - left at 8 AM - Olana a fantastic Persian house - nothing we would want - some good pictures of Frederick Church - poor landscaping but gorgeous view - lunch at Charleston Restaurant, Hudson - interesting old town - to Thomas Cole House in Catskill - run down but livable - back to Tarrytown (slow at Tappan Zee Bridge) at 7:15 pm - home at 8:15.  Wes had worked on paths House to Shed - rested his cold.
