May 27

1983 - Friday - 50° at 6:45 and raining - at 7 AM there was .70 in rain gauge.  Work at Ballard cancelled.
Did the wash - sanded mantel and stained it darker.  Wes waxed the new Kitchen door.  He started wrapping the boiler of his engine.  After lunch - just mist at times so could work outside.  Cultivated back of Rhododendron on South side.  Wes brought down rest of wood chips - makes a beautiful "woodsy" look.  Moved Myrtle from hill to North side and put strawberries in that place.  Some animal ate broccoli & cauliflower.

1984 - Sunday - 52° at 6 AM - Clearing - 35/100 IN. in rain gauge.  To 8 o'clock Mass.  Did a work wash.  Fixed dinner for Eileen - here with Boo at 11:45.  Nice visit - took walks with Boo.  After she left I cut grass on south side - planted zucchinis, yellow squash, green beans, three more tomato plants to make 7 in all.  Put fertilizer on dogwood Wes moved along cliff path.

1985 - Memorial Day - 56° at 6 AM - Kelly & Barbara here.  They left for home at 8:30.  We did a lot of outdoor work - Wes spread all the wood chips - all around garden room.  He brought up wheelbarrows loads of leaf mulch (our own chipping) to spread on perennial gardens after I finished putting in the remaining Cleome and snapdragon & ageratum I grew.  I cut grass - planted Hawsie Nash's cucumbers - [[?oier]] rosemary - fertilized tomatoes - phoned Framingham - the Webbs - to get reservation for Eileen June 7th.

1986 - Tuesday - 56° at 6 AM - Foggy - cleared to a beautiful warm day - Luncheon Day for Ballard Garden Crew.  Prepared good - set table - 6 in Dining Room - 4 in Solar.  Anne Franceschini here at 10:15 - ladies came at 12 - Mesdames Pedersen - Harrison - Callahan - Miffley - Morrison - Dayton - Clark - Sticknoth - Hoffman - to meeting at Carol Stoddards at 2 - home at 4:45 - Wes spread leaf mulch - watered.

1987 - Wednesday - 52° at 6:15 - Raining - almost a half inch when it stopped at noon.  No morning Mass account Ascension Vigil.  Took "Father's [[?Webun]] Home" print to Fine Framing Shop - found Dec. 30 1900 Philadelphia and Providence newspapers in frame.  Shopped Ancona following - Marcus - Post Office - Lunch - nap - mixed soil and peat filled big posts and planters Coral Impatiens bought at Ancona's.
Wes weeded paths.  Quit early - Mass at 7:30.  Almost missed it as fell asleep after dinner


May 28

1983 - Saturday - 40° at 6 AM - Sun up.  Beautiful day.  I worked at Ballard in morning with Madeline Morrison.  Wes cleaned off Solar top - loaded with oak seeds - graded at mailbox - pruned Ilex Verticillata.
After lunch I planted the two small Astilbe brought from Ballard and a piece of Baptisia - cut the grass as rain predicted for tomorrow.  Planted rest of tomatoes 4 plants - cultivated all beds.

1984 - Memorial Day - Monday - 54° at 6:30 and raining.  Rained most of day - sometimes heavily.
Managed to [[?prick]] out loads of Viola Crassa and Phlox from top of wall garden - planted some of them on cliff wall and the phlox and poppies, a few along wood knoll path, moving the Wood Saxifraga.  Wes in shop, familiarizing himself with his model.  I washed, ironed, wrote Joan - Mended tie of kitchen cushion.  Solar window leaking.

1985 - Tuesday - 60° at 6 AM.  Cloudy.  Foggy - rain in afternoon (3/10 rain last evening)  To Mass.
Luncheon Day for Ballard Garden Crew - Muriel Pedersen, Boli Hoffman, Carol Stoddard, Nancy McDaniel, Hawsie Nash, Anne Tracy, Madeline Morrison, Ricky Harrison, Edith Meffley forgot - Anne Franceschini served.  Guests here 11:45-1:45 when we left for Garden Club Meeting at Ail Ruggles.  Ladies very complementary on gardens.  Wes had shop time in rain.  Rain continued into evening, thank God.

1986 - Wednesday - 60° at 6 AM - Fair - warm - high wind made it extra dry.  I planted the two GCA plants (European Ginger & Purple Lobelia) Muriel Pedersen brought yesterday - Ricky Harrison's Lobelia - Nancy Callahan's Astilbe.  We left for NY Botanical Garden at 9:15 to see the Sissinghurst White Garden - Mostly "gone by" but interesting - also walked through the Perennial Garden - had our lunch on a bench in the garden - home at 1:30 - Nap - Out to water - cultivate.  Wes started leveling walkway off deck - will get blue stone for the path - piece by piece.

1987 - Thursday - 56° at 6 AM - Cloudy - Breezy.  Cool morning, some light sprinkles - very warm and humid in afternoon - Funny weather.  I worked at Ballard in morning - met Mrs Cuddy of Fox Gardens, Wilton (462-7240) on Memorial Garden Chrysoganum - home for lunch & nap.  Wes worked on Wood Knoll paths edging & bringing gravel for them.  Mixed soil for me to plant all little plants brought down from the ARGS Hartford.  Put most on step rock garden.  Phoned Kelly in Fairfield - she will come here tomorrow - so will Eileen
