May 31 

1983 - Tuesday - 58° at 6 AM - Sun burning through fog.  Re earlier years, bananas run from 49¢ to 55¢.  8/10 inch more of rain in gauge at 8 AM.  Mostly cloudy day - terrible weather.  Wes went for Acetylene - I went to Stop & Shop. 
Carol Coggeshall phoned - Ginger Dienst with her and wanted to see us - came for sandwich luncheon - Walked up to see Grouse House - rode through Ned Mountain Road.  Left at 4 - Ginger wanted us to join them for dinner at Vineyard - formerly Ardo's in Purdy's - Stars coming out on return home at 10:30 PM. 

1984 - Ascension Thursday - 48° at 6 AM and raining.  2.40 inches in gauge at 8 AM - another quarter inch before it stopped at noon.  Floods in Connecticut River - Westchester - Jersey - House and shop chores.  To noon Mass.  Washed flowerpots and straightened up garage shelves.  Removed birdfeeders from wire and washed them: put them away.  Left dome feeder on cliff hook.  Inspected gardens - water high at base of wall garden.  Bought tax exempt Conn. Housing Bonds. 

1985 - Friday - 58° at 6 AM - Cloudy - looked like rain.  Only mist in afternoon - didn't have to stop working.  Did work wash.  To Nicholas - Wes bough white jacket and khaki slacks - to cleaner - Stop & Shop - liquor store to stock up for Sunday's party.  Home for lunch and nap.  Wes ordered gravel for garden room.  To Sturdevants for pictures.  I chopped peat into Leucothoe bank - we put on leaf mulch - finished putting mulch on perennial garden - put on fertilizer there.  Wes trimmed up Crab at end of shade garden. 

1986 - Saturday. 64° at 5:45 - Awake early as electricity went off & bedroom clock was flashing.  Cloudy.  Became sunny - hot - cloudy in afternoon - thunder but only ten drops.  Well driller John Finderak here to discuss new garden well - decided to go ahead.  Worked on grounds all day - Wes continued on cliff path - I cut what grass was growing - burned out - watered - cleaned up garden room - spread 2 bags of wood chips left over from last year.  Mailgram from British Airways.  Won round trip to London June 10/20.  

1987 - Sunday - 70° at 6AM - Fair - H H H again Thunder in the afternoon but nothing here - a bit cooler in the evening though.  To 8 o'clock Mass.  Did light garden chores - deadheading one of the Rhodo. Carolina put in rest of Impatiens - a couple around the pipes.  Kelly here about one o'clock - showed us plants she bought at Olivers we gave her Iris - Bleeding Heart and Corydalis Lutia - she left for home after having a sandwich with us.  Robin, her Cairn Terrier, walked through Freddy Pond to cool off.  Did more chores.  Wes cooked a good steak - ate on the deck.

June 1

1983 - Wednesday - 48° at 6 AM - Sun coming out - mostly beautiful day.  Clouded up late afternoon. 
Get jobs done day.  Put tomatoes in ground below terrace wall - moved plants from Solar into kitchen and put some outdoors - Cut grass - filled car with gas - trimmed plants on wall garden - emptied, partially, the water barrels under chimney - did wash etc. - packed for trip to Notre Dame tomorrow - Bit phoned she was not going to Holmdens, so we will stop in Lock Haven.

1984 - Friday - 45° at 6 AM and it is clear!  Sun is coming out from behind clouds in East.  Raccoon had eaten all the sunflower seed from feeder off deck.
I went to Ballard Garden - only worked an hour as too wet - to bank - Brunetti - Gran Central - Caldor (Rangers)
Wes had raised corner of triangle bed - planted peppers there and replanted the Rosemary standard.  Planted three "Basket Tomatoes" in big pot - cut grass - Wes cleaned up under bird feeder wire and brought down chips for the area.
With Rosses to Norwalk Hospital - Nancy Carroll's African prints.

1985 - Saturday - 62° at 6 AM - Sunny - Rain at 3 AM - 1/2 inch - good.  Beautiful day - windy.
Went early to Stop & Shop - Cheese Shop - discovered banks now closed on Saturdays - shopped for party tomorrow.  I made spreads and cheese dollars - Wes grubbed out South bank around and below new blueberry bushes.  I transplanted Petunias from W77 pot into perennial garden and we used that pot for the Jasmine spiral.  I deadheaded wall garden - Wes found lots of stones for a wall in grubbing out on cliffside.  Cooked lamb chops on grill

1986 - Sunday.  64° at 6:15 AM - Thunderstorm during night - only .05 inch rain - another hot, humid day.  To 8 o'clock Mass.  Louise McKeon took me to her friend Paige Dickey in North Salem - gave us booklets on England.  Cut candles from our white pines.  Spread leaf mulch on perennial and half-shade garden.  Wes started removing logs from new well area - I watered Impatiens and Dell Walk plants & shade garden.

1987 - Monday - 68° at 6 AM - Fair - note quite as hot as recent days - but had to keep out of sun.
After house chores to Brunetti - gasoline - dropped pictures off to be developed - to Stop & Shop - Liquor - Talbots for a cotton blouse for Eileen's birthday - home to week new bed off deck - Wes raked up birdseed shells.
After lunch and short nap, went with Muriel Pedersen to Claire's Nursery - bought phlox for Ballard Garden and plants for our W77 pots - also 3 White Nancy Lamium - Home to water transplants - wilting in heat.  Rained at 10 pm!
